The Daughter of Union County by Francine Thomas Howard. Published by Lake Union

Slavery has been banned for 14 years when Lord Henry Hardin and his wife Lady Bertha learns she cannot have children. Henry refuses to let the American side of his family line die out, so he begets children with his black mistress, Salome. They have three children together who are passed off as Bertha’s children as they look white. When the truth eventually comes out, Salome does her best to see her children get the future they deserve. I liked this book, but I didn’t love it, it seemed like a rehash of a lot of books about the “old South” I read back in the 80s
