Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh. Published by Putnam

Rachel was only a child when her mother died and she was sent away from Kenya, the only home she ever knew, to live with family in England. Six long, cold years later she returns to Kenya and her father, but much has changed. Her father is living with a cold and distant woman whom he plans to marry and the peace she remembers has been replaced by violence and fear as members of the Mau Mau try to unite native Kenyans against the British and take back control of their own land. This is an extraordinary story, taking place against the Mau Mau uprisings of the 1950’s. The violence contrasts painfully with the beauty of Africa. Highly recommended
