We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter. Published by Viking

Occasionally you read a blurb about a book and you just know that when you start that book, everything else will go on hold. This is one of those books – I stayed up well into the night because I couldn’t bear to put it down. Based on the true story of a family of Polish Jews who are separated at the beginning of World War II, this is the tale of how they all vowed to find each other again. With one in France when it is invaded, others are in Poland, torn apart when the country is divided between the Soviet Union and the Nazis. Sent to gulags, work camps, other countries far from home, no matter what happens, the members of the Kurc family keep only one goal in mind – to be reunited with each other.  This is a story of incredible courage and love in the face of ignorance, hatred and greed. One of the most amazing books I have ever read
