The House of Birds by Morgan McCarthy. Published by Headline

Oliver’s girlfriend Kate has inherited a very run down house. It comes with a lot of family baggage and hard feelings and all she wants to do is ell it and be done with it. Oliver, on the other hand, is fascinated with the old house. Growing up, he imagined everything was a mystery waiting to be solved. Now, he has a real mystery on his hands. He and Kate have found a diary hidden inside another book. The diary, written during and after World War I, belonged to a woman named Sophia Louis, and after reading it, Oliver becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to the woman. The story in the diary and what Oliver discovers will have a profound impact on his life. I love these type of stories, but it’s rare to see one with a male protagonist. McCarthy does a wonderful job of bringing the old house and Sophia to life. Loved it
