This is the story of two women in the 1920’s and the town of Marvel. One woman is tring to get to a lynching therw, the other is trying to get as far away from it as she can. Ottie Lee Henshaw is the prettiest woman in her small Ohio town, and tired of fending of advances from her leacherous boss, she decide to go on a road trip. Calla Destry is a young black woman who is trying to escape the violence in her small town and find the lover who promised to make everything better. Together, these two women form a portrait of Jim Crow America in a novel that is not always easy to read, but worth it in the end
