Dis Mem Ber by Joyce Carol Oates. Published by Grove Atlantic

While I am not normally a fan of short stories, I will always make an exception for Joyce Carol Oates; her stories are intricately woven mystery puzzles. In the title story, a young girl has fallen under the spell of a much older male relative and is coaxed into climbing into his car, only to drive away into oblivion. Another story showcases a college student obsessed with the drowning death (a murder?) of another female student. Obsessed to the point where her own identity begins to disappear. The clever title of this book made me look twice – does that mean what I think it means? – for the answer, read this collection of exciting stories yourself. A wonderful read on a chill fall evening
