White Gold by Caitlin O’Connell. Published by Alibi

In the follow-up to Ivory Ghosts, biologist Catherine Sohon is still tracking the ivory poacher that got away from her in Namibia. She’s followed him to China, where she’s posing as an ivory buyer when the whole thing goes south. In a roomful of traders, gunfire breaks out, leaving many people dead and Catherine the suspect in a Triad war. Making her way across the country to the forests of Yunnan where a few remaining Chinese-Asian elephants are left, Catherine battles poachers, dirty officials and locals suspicious of her motives. I love this series and O’Connell knows her subject well. It’s heart breaking to read about the murder of these gentle, magnificent creatures. And just wait until you meet LuLu the elephant. Highly recommended
