From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon. Published by Lake Union

Times have grown desperate for Eva Roselli, a Jew living in Italy in 1943. Fearing capture by the Nazis, she turns to the Church and a local priest for help. As children, Eva and Angelo Bianco were best friends, even though their religions often separated them. As young adults, they fell in love, bu Angelo’s love for the Church was even greater and he joined the priesthood. Now, Eva turns to Angelo, hoping he will hide her in the convent. He agrees and Eva learns she’s not the first Jew he’s sheltered from the Gestapo. But even as she takes refuge within the walls of the convent, Eva knows she can’t sit idly by and let the man she still loves risk his very life for her. Eva will have to make an impossible decision. Oh,what an unbarebly sad, beautiful story of love, conviction and faith. Highly recommended.
