The Chalk Pit by Elly Griffiths. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Ruth Galloway cannot stay away from murder, and this time she’s examining a set of bones found in a Norwich chalk mine. There are literally hundreds of these tunnels all throughout the countryside and there have been strange rumors about them for years. AS Ruth examines the remains, she notices that they appear to have been boiled soon after the person was killed. Meanwhile DCI Nelson and his team are looking into the disappearance of Barbara, a homeless woman who sleeps “rough”. There are stories that Barbara had gone Underground, could the remains in the mine belong to Barbara? Amid stories of cannibalism and ritual murder, and another dead body, Nelson and his ream, alongside Ruth, try to uncover the ghastly truth before anyone else is murdered. I love this series, the knowledge of forensics and archaeology that Ruth bring to the story, coupled with her awkward relationship with Nelson and their daughter make this one of the finest mystery series being written
