Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Published by Ballantine

It’s 1939 in Memphis, Tennessee and 12-year-old Rill Foss and her siblings are enjoying their very unconventional life aboard an old boat in the Mississippi River. When her father has to rush her mother to the hospital, authorities swoop in and take the children to an orphanage. Rill’s protests that her parents will return for them fall on deaf ears, leaving the girl battling to try to keep her siblings from being separated. Decades later, federal prosecutor Avery Stafford returns home to care for her ailing father and begins to untangle a network of lies and secrets about her family’s past. This book is based on the shocking true story of a Tennessee orphanage that kidnapped children from their parents and sold them to wealthy people who wanted children. I loved the historical part of this story more than the contemporary half, Rill was such a vibrant and daring heroine
