House of Shadows by Nicola Cornick. Published by Graydon House

When Holly Ansell’s brother disappears while researching their family history at Graydon Park, she goes in search of him. Holly finds a diary written by a 19th century courtesan and is soon immersed in the life of Lavinia Flyte, who was secreted away at Graydon Hall by the powerful lord she was having an affair with.  Holly learns of a secret treasure supposedly kept in the house, a pearl that could tell the future, and of the doomed queen that lived in the house nearly two hundred years before Lavinia. Cornick’s novel is a rich, multi-layered tapestry of history and the roles that women have been forced to play in a male dominated world
