In the mid 19th century, May Bedloe becomes a seamstress aboard a Steamboat on the Ohio River. Her talent and personality quickly earn her the respect and friendship of the actors on board, but her happiness is tempered by what she sees happening in the South. Plying the river, the ship is caught between the Confederate South and Union North and May becomes embroiled in the smuggling of slaves, first because of a debt she owes, but later because her conscience compels her to do so. Beautifully written, this story will whisk readers back in time to one of the most tumultuous times in American history
