The Thicket by Joe R. Lansdale. Published by Mullholland

After Jack Parker’s rough start in life – seeing his grandmother killed in a gruesome accident and losing his parents to a small pox outbreak – he and his sister, Lula are headed to their uncle’s farm. But on the way they are set upon by ruffians who kill his grandfather and kidnap his sister. Vowing revenge, Jack follows in their trail; along the way recruiting the help of a dwarf, a grave digger and a lady of ill repute. The lady in question has a lot of information about the ruffians – and as it turns out Jack’s family as well.

Equal parts tragic and comic, this is a novel that’s hard to define. The only thing I can say is, read it, you won’t regret it.
