Reykjavik Nights by Arnaldur Indridason. Published by St. Martins

Readers have fallen for Inspector Erlendur, now go back to the beginning of his career and meet him as a young detective. Erlendur finds is days filled with mostly petty complaints, like traffic stops, domestic disputes and the like, but a murder changes everything. No one really seems to care when a homeless man is found drowned in a ditch, but Erlendur remembers the man from his days on the night shift and becomes determined to know who the man was and why he was killed. His search will take him into the very bowels of his city, to a dark world he scarcely knew existed.

As always, just the right amount of detail combined with action. The thinking person’s detective.
